Welcome to 2nd Grade - Room 112!
Hello! Welcome to 2nd Grade! My name is Ms.Tomal, and I am very excited to be your child's 2nd grade teacher! I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child, as well as working, learning and growing together this year! This is my 12th year at Garvy School and my 19th year working within CPS. This year, we will be studying many different components in literacy and continue to learn and develop our skills in Reading and Writing. We also will be exploring who we are as mathematicians, taking risks and working together as we learn new Math concepts and investigating exciting topics in Science! I hope to inspire and motivate a love for continuous learning! Here, you will find important information and resources that you can utilize throughout the school year. Updates to come!

Maintaining a Culture of Calm
Here are some fun Brain Break activities to help relief stress, anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed. Enjoy these together as a family and encourage your child to utilize some of these breathing exercises throughout their day!
Shape Breathing:
Have kids draw any shape or design on a piece of paper (or on the board). Then, have them slowly breathe in and out as they trace their finger along the shape. With this breathing technique, kids are focused just on the shape, allowing them to really calm their minds in the moment.
Mindful Sitting:
Ask students to settle into a comfortable and stable sitting position. Have them imagine that they are sitting like a mountain—stable, solid, and supported by the earth. End with three mindful breaths.
Balloon Breaths:
Have students pretend they’re blowing up a red balloon. Then, have them hold it up on a string, let the balloon go, and watch it disappear.
Cool Off the Pizza:
For this breathing exercise, imagine you have a hot slice of pizza in front of you. Slowly breathe in like you are smelling the pizza. Then, slowly breathe out to cool it off. Try this a few times.
